Homework--help meeeee!

I was just curious--with all the schools in session now--how's everybody doing helping kids with homework assignments? What are some of the big assignments popping up? What great resources are you using? Where are we lacking in assignment support?

I haven't really helped kids in the children's section with homework yet...but I was working with a student last week who needed to read a biography on someone born before a certain date. (I can't remember the exact date, but it was before 1920 I think) anyway, another librarian had worked with someone else that same morning and had come to the conclusion that there is no real way to search for a person born before a certain date...Any ideas in case this comes up again? (other than just telling the student to browse the biographies)?

Hmmm--you can do a birthdate search in Biography Resource Center (of course, just putting in "before 1920" gave me over 90,000 hits!). I'm thinking that as an assignment the student might have had a little more info that they weren't sharing that could have narrowed it down some--what class is this for, who are you studying, what time period and where? Sometimes you have to "nag" them a bit. :-) There still may be no "real way" to search...

I was recently asked to purchase more autobiographies written for children. We get that assignment every once in awhile, but unfortunately there are not very many autobiographies written for younger readers. I did come up with some 15 or so autobiographies that we do have in the system and are located in the junior biography section with a couple in the YA biography section. If you need that list, please e-mail me or call me at extension 19215. I will continue to watch for new titles to order.
