New Books!

I worked at ALA Midwinter as a volunteer, so got to explore the exhibits for awhile after. I spent most of the time looking at new books. Here are some of my favorites (thanks to Betsy for ordering quickly):

Martha Doesn't Say Sorry by Samantha Berger

Little Oink by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Stella Unleashed by Linda Ashman (Colorado Author)

Also since Beth Krommes won the Caldecott, we have ordered more of her books. My favorite is Grandmother Winter.
You can always find more new books, dvds and cds for kids on Tales' Treehouse. I update it a couple of times a week.

Happy Awards Day!

The ALA Youth Media Awards were announced this morning!

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, won the Newbery.

There were four Newbery Honors: The Underneath, The Surrender Tree, Savvy, and After Tupac and D Foster.

The House in the Night, illustrated by Beth Krommes and written by Susan Marie Swanson, won the Caldecott.

Of the 3 Caldecott Honors and 1 Medal winner, three of those titles were on our online Caldecott Hopeful poll! (How I Learned Geography and A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever were the other honors on our poll, plus A River of Words, which we didn't pick.)

Full award info:

ALSC award list

Coretta Scott King awards

Ooops, forgot YALSA (including the new Morris award, for first-time YA author)

Horn Book has a nice round up.

Don't forget to vote in the Caldecott Hopefuls Poll! You can't see the results after you have voted because ALD's "winner" will be announced on January 26th along with ALA's "real" winner.

Caldecott Hopefuls Blog

I'm sorry to push down Melissa's post about the Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy website--please make sure to visit!

I wanted to direct everyone to the ALD 2009 Caldecott Hopefuls blog. Here we are posting and discussing great picture books published in 2008 that have a chance at the 2009 Caldecott Medal. Towards the end of October, Melissa will take our postings and create a final list of about 10 books on which we will have patrons vote for a winner. Then we'll compare our winner with the ALA winner mid-January. Feel free to comment and shoot me an email if you want to become a contributor.
